Everybody has a dream home in mind and they decide to settle down and buy a house. Unfortunately, when you buy an already built home you have to compromise on the dream. The only true way to have the house of your dreams is to have one custom built. It isn’t an easy process and there is a lot that goes into it, but very few people are disappointed in their new home when they have it built for them.
The only ones that are disappointed are the ones that made some mistakes that are common when building a custom home. The best thing to do is to know about these mistakes ahead of time so you can avoid them. In this article, we will go over several so you know what not to do.
1 – Going overboard
A lot of people naturally have a fairly long wishlist when it comes to what they want in their new home. Since it is custom-built it is very hard to restrain themselves and will tend to go overboard with the things they want. Some of them can get quite wild with the floor plans and at times there are things that simply won’t work.
The best way to avoid this is to have realistic expectations. If you think your list is a bit too ambitious then the architect will certainly try to use reason with you. Tell them what you want, but when you go over the home builder floor plans be open to the suggestions that they have and see what you can do to get what you want while still being reasonable.
2 – Picking the wrong site
Unfortunately, one of the most difficult parts when it comes to building a custom home is finding appropriate land to build on. It is already very expensive to build a custom home so if you have to buy an existing home to tear down just to get the plot of land you want, you are adding a considerable cost to the operation.
This means that you are limited to looking far from city centers where things get a bit rural. This may work for your lifestyle especially if you work from home. However, you may be limited when it comes to hooking up to city services like water and sewer. Choose the site carefully and know what you are getting into.
3 – Being in a rush
Another common issue that turns people off from building a home is that it is time-consuming. Getting the home planned out, waiting for permits, and coordinating many different construction crews takes a considerable amount of time. Then there is the time it takes to receive custom materials and features.
This means that you have to have a lot of patience. If you are in a temporary home while you wait then make sure that you are able to stay there as long as you need to since you never know when it will end.
